Opening each and every subscribed newsgroup and downloading all new
headers every few minutes just to see if someone's replied to a post
of yours?
No thanks.
so you want to say that you have subscribed groups that you never
open? why are you subscribed to them then?
you have to open a group to see if it has replies, so what is the
problem? program does it automatically.
You have a point; if you're going to read the group, you'll download the
headers eventually. Do it now, do it later, no difference.
and of course you don't download all headers, the program xnews points
out your replies.
You have to download the overview records for all articles received
since the last time you checked the group, since you have to look at the
References: header to see if there's a followup to your post.
that is the function that I would use to notify the
user that a given group has a reply waiting for user but that part
would be done by xnews, not me manually.
To affect any saving in network I/O overhead, you'd also have to save
all the overview records you've downloaded until the user finally opens
the group, at which time you'd only have to fetch the records for any
articles that arrived since you last retrieved them.
of course if no source code is available, this discussion is
pointless.
Only useless in the context of modifying Xnews; users and maintainers of
other news clients read this group and might like to implement your
suggested feature.
Or as someone suggested, someone could implement a stand-alone utility
to scan the headers for followups, although that wouldn't be as
efficient or convenient as having it built in to the client.
exactly.
