Contrary to what Indi imagines,
Windows users don't have to “ reboot to install a font ”.
The changes X.EXE makes to the registry ( when required )
simply insures that the fonts will still be there after a reboot.
I use the DejaVu Sans Mono font everywhere, including the system.
I removed DejaVuSansMono.TTF from X.EXE's folder and from
\Windows\Fonts\ by rebooting into a “ Safe Mode with Console ”.
After rebooting, no programs anywhere were using the DejaVu font,
not the DOS console, not even X.EXE.
I put DejaVuSansMono.TTF back into X.EXE's folder.
As soon as I ran X.EXE the DejaVu Sans Mono font was
immediately used everywhere I looked,
including already running programs like RegEdit,
open folders and the DOS console.
No reboot was required, no programs had to be reStarted.
I reRemoved DejaVuSansMono.TTF from X.EXE's folder and rebooted.
The DejaVu Sans Mono font was still being use everywhere;
so I know that X.EXE's changes stuck.
