Ah those were the days, eh Danny? ;-)
I would like to know if a "Reply to Author" will expose me to
email address harvesting more than a "Reply to Group". A "Reply
to Group" posts an email address to the group as well. Won't the
same email address be sent with the "Reply to Author" message.
I have read that using a Reply to Author field as being "safe" from
robots. I don't know how true that is though. Some people use it and
it might be OK.
Often those who want to give out an email address and protect
themselves from bots munge it a little, placing it into their sig
file as in: yourname AT somewhere DOT com -- Or similar.
But if you are using a viable address when posting (even if its a
'throw-away'), there's not much point in munging anything.
I do recall that when I first began posting to usenet I did use an
unmunged address and I did get spammed (and got some k00ky emails).
But that was back in the days when ISPs were less diligent about
controlling spam. Perhaps there's less risk now? - I still shelter
behind my .invalid address (...once burnt...).
