I've been looking for websites that provide automatic translations.
So far, the only one I've found tries to translate whole paragraphs
and more if you ask it to, but then hides too much of the results
behind the ads it includes. Can you suggest any better ones?

Ads?

Firefox 3: <http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/>.
Can search and get add-ons within Fx (Tools > Add-ons > Get Add-ons)
and/or here <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/>.

To get rid of ads:
Adblock Plus: <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865>
with EasyElement + EasyList (filter subscription)

A couple popular translators (and see sites they can use):
FoxLingo: <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2444>
translator: <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3361>

I'll think of trying those.
..
I've already seen enough about the limitations of NewsProxy

From reading or from personal experience by trying it yourself?

Only from reading what other people said about it.
..
that I'm now considering Hamlet, and reading the hamlet.en.*
newsgroups in preparation for deciding which version of
Hamlet.

<http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Hamlet>

Now back to Hamster...
-Download the current "final" version of Hamster classic then extract.
-If you haven't already, download WinHlp32.exe for Windows Vista, see
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607> for more info and download
link, then download the one for your system and install it.
-Now open the Hamster_en.hlp file, and start with "Installation".
-After installing and running, explore menus and Help, e.g. Scores.hst

While reading up on or researching new-to-you software is a good idea,
the software suggested that met your stated requirements last month
are well known and (have been) used by many. I can understand some
hesitation wrt new/unknown stuff, but you can only do so much reading
docs or (biased) opinions of others, and just need to stop
dilly-dallying and *just do/try it*. Then ask (more) questions.

Somewhat difficult when my time is already overloaded with what I've
already decided to do.

Dialog, the full-featured newsreader I'm using (on Vista) Help says:

| Scoring and actions is one of Dialog's most powerful features. The
| syntax and actually most of the code is from Jürgen Haible's
| excellent local mail- and newsserver Hamster.

I'd recommend Dialog (first) instead of Windows Mail + Hamster. Some
reasons being: a) Dialog can have multiple groups and servers, plus
optionally combine same groups from multiple servers with rules; b)
it's easier than using a newsreader + proxy/local server to filter; c)
besides scoring similar to Hamster, there's also actions (watch,
retrieve, ignore, unsetwatchignore, mark, unmark, delete, markread,
markunread, keep, unkeep, setcolor(foreground_color;background_color))
and can be used as filter/scoring rules and/or manually; d) group(s)
can get just headers then selected bodies, and can also set group(s)
to get headers and bodies (like Hamster - gets all unless filtered);
e) doesn't matter about servers supporting non-overview headers as
Dialog can filter on any header and filters twice - when retrieving
headers and on any (other) header when retrieving articles.

Dialog is a customisable newsreader, development seems to have
stopped, but Dialog works on Vista & Windows 7 beta. If interested:
Dialog site: <http://www.40tude.com/dialog/>
Alternate site (includes updates): <http://dialog.datalist.org/>

Download 2.0.15.1 and also the 2.0.15.41 update (from the second site)
As you're using Vista, and as Dialog was written prior to Vista (and
can also be used as a portable newsreader), then I'd recommend
installing to a non-Program Files location and uncheck the "Launch
40tude Dialog" box on last screen. Then rename dialog.exe and extract
the updated dialog.exe to the same folder. Run Dialog, explore, and
look in its Help and Wiki.
..
Do you know the results of Dialog only for those newsgroups where
I've caught up, and continuing to use Windows Mail for the others?
If there are no problems with that, I can try it sooner than otherwise.

Can you name any of the cheap or free ones
good at filtering out spam, but still good at maintaining
usability?

<http://news.individual.net/> is a well-run and reliable service, does
a good job of filtering, is highly regarded, and is the best, IMO.

I'll look into trying <http://news.individual.net/> tomorrow.
