What good free news reader programs are best and used most.
The best ones tend to be used least, not most. The best ones have to
be *learned*. 99% of Usenet posters aren't interested in making an
effort to learn anything. But the fact that you've posted here
suggests that you're one of the 1% minority.
I just
want something simple that will let me read newsgroups and reply/send
to them. I'm using Motzarella.org for my news server and it is just
fine for me.
I suggest starting with Thunderbird, because it's easy. Then try
Gravity 2.7, XPN and Pan, which are better than Thunderbird at
present. Try *all* of them: tastes differ, and I can't predict which
one you'll prefer.
Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
Gravity: http://mpgravity.sourceforge.net/
XPN: http://xpn.altervista.org/index-en.html
Pan: http://pan.rebelbase.com/
All of these are "simple". If you later find a need for something more
complex, tin, gnus, nn and slrn all have their admirers.
