Shouldn't you just be able to put a colon after the newsgroup name
and rename it to ~/.newsrc? Or does slrn use a non-standard
.newsrc?

Yes. Scripting gyrations are not necessary.

slrn calls it .jnewsrc by default. Excerpt follows.

comp.os.linux.powerpc! 1-533
comp.os.linux.security: 1-4068,4185-4187,4190-4191,4208
comp.os.linux.setup! 1-10636
comp.os.linux.x! 1-1820
comp.os.linux.xbox! 1-29
comp.os.ms-windows.nt.admin.security! 1-51
comp.os.netware.security! 1-9
comp.security.announce! 1-90
comp.security.gss-api! 1-15
comp.security.pgp.announce! 1-3
comp.security.pgp.resources! 1-16
comp.std.unix! 1-6
comp.unix.admin: 1-2974
comp.unix.advocacy! 1-27

In the above list, only comp.os.linux.security and comp.unix.admin are
subscribed.
