This URL has been previously discussed:

news://news.aioe.org/news.software.readers

Frank Slootweg has previously explained [*] why this is a good
starting point for "how to get *the majority of the biggest userbase*
to *a* newsreader/News-server. *That* is the largest hurdle".

The URL could be in a signature with a few lines of explanatory text.

Do you have link that explains in detail how that works?

The second MID, still quoted above, explains how that works.
Relevant parts from that post below:

| It (OE/WM) *uses* the news-server part and - if needed -
| *configures* (a News Account for) the News server.

| OE/WM *do* configure themselves automatically!
| That is the whole point! I.e. even if the user has *never* used News on
| his system, this:
|
| news://news.aioe.org/news.software.readers
|
| entered is his *webbrowser* (normally IE) will:
|
| - Invoke OE/WM.
| - Create a News Account named "news.aioe.org" for the server
| news.aioe.org.
| - Will download the latest (normally 300) articles in
| news.software.readers from news.aioe.org.
| - Will present the (Subject/From/Sent/Size) list of these articles in
| the upper-right pane, ready for the user to start reading.
|
| And that is all done *fully automatically*.

| A user-name/email address is not needed
| until *posting* (and can be basically anything). And news.aioe.org does
| not need a password. That is why that server was selected in the
| previous GG->newsreader thread. So with such a URL you can completely
| set up a server/group combination for *reading* articles.
|
| Believe me, it *works*. I've tested this myself (several times for
| several servers and groups). This is one thing which Microsoft *did* do
| right. Perhaps hard/'unpleasant' to believe (for some), but a fact
| nonetheless.

<http://news.individual.net/config.php> is good for configuring many
newsreaders and could be used as a general guide for other servers.

Thanks for this, Rom. That's very useful.

I won't be reading any of the other new posts on the thread, but
I owed you this reply because of my request.

Have you noticed that the Usenet has more than its share of neurotic
individuals who have the screaming meamies if someone refuses to
take their advice? And/or simply cannot accept the fact that they
have lost an argument?

If you wish to reply here, I'll read it, but otherwise any replies
will be ignored.

Oh yeh. Have you noticed also that these neurotic individuals are
willing to argue from now until the end of time?

I guess that's what they are actually into, arguing. I'm not.
There are all sorts of things that I find more rewarding.
