As for the site you linked, I drilled down to a description of newsgroups
to find this lead-off: "Every Usenet server offers you directories,
called "Newsgroups". Newsgroups are like directories on your HD: They can
directly contain data or they can contain sub-directories."
http://www.tgos.org/newbie/
I was not impressed.
That is a rather odd and confusing description, but the site as a whole
isn't that bad.
I usually plug this in when I want to help a newbie get up to speed:
Newcomers to newsgroups should start here
<http://computer.howstuffworks.com/newsgroup.htm>
and here
<http://www.anta.net/misc/nnq/>, the Official Home Page of the
newsgroup called news.newusers.questions.
