I am an avid slrn fan and use it on my Linux box. Does
anyone know if there are any plans to port slrn over to Mac OS X?
There are binary packages of slrn version 0.9.8.1 here:
<http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/slrn>

After version 0.9.9 has been released, it's likely that new binary
packages will be available before long.

I got the latest from svn and tried to compile it, only to be
greeted by

./configure
checking build system type... i386-apple-darwin9.4.0
checking host system type... i386-apple-darwin9.4.0
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... no
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl.exe... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

of course on Linux, the build-essentials package takes care of all that
stuff for you, but I'm not sure how to make it work on MacOS.

I've been using Linux for years, and compiling from source, but never
encountered anything called a "build-essentials package"; I'm guussing
that's a distro-specific name for a binary package that will install a
compiler and associated 'stuff', such as the make tool. Perhaps an OS/X
user could tell you how to get compiling tools installed on your OS.

I've installed slrn by compiling from source on several versions of Linux. It may not have been specifically with slrn that I needed the build-essentials package, but I know that on more than one occasion I was not able to compile from source for something because it was missing the build-essential package.

I just checked:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=475246

says you need build-essentials
