Hey, I have to wonder why no one ever mentions NN in these discussions. :-)

Well Aaron I have taken quite some time and trouble to get nn up and running
and I must say that it is a great little program but the documentation sux
a little :-). Nevertheless with a bit more tweaking I am sure that I will
get it as I wish although it will not replace slrn.

LOL -- sorry if it took you some time. :-) What platform are you using?
I chose NN because it was the fastest, cleanest, and easiest program to
set up. It also worked mostly like I wanted it with very little tweaking.
There is a very detailed man page which covers just about every aspect
of its operation.

I suspect some of the trouble I had is that nn appears to have a slightly
different approach to reading the news and I have been using the slrn way
for a while now. The man page is great but I fell short on web based
documentation and discussion. I did not realise however that there was a
newsgroup dedicated to its use. I will quietly lurk there for a while :-).
My platform is slackware linux which comes with an nn package.

Yes, most of the web based documentation is a copy of the information
posted to news.software.nn or the like over the years. As for the volume
of the news group, you can say that it's very quiet. :-) I think most of
the activity lately has been me throwing up some patches for it.

I actually created the initial version of the nn package for slackware,
so I am glad that some people have come to use it at least in passing.
:-)

I know what you mean with the different ways that each newsreader does
things. I consider this a good thing, because if they all did news the
same way, they wouldn't all be interesting.

If I might ask, what do you like more about slrn over NN? Just curious,
as it has been a while since I decided that slrn was not going to work
for me.

Well much of it is familiarity I suspect which is why I have been trialling
a few different newsreaders lately. Plus I have become personally involved
in the slrn project (I rewrote the slrn website and have become involved
with the documentation rewrite) and it made sense to immerse myself deeply
in slrn. But nn is a nice newsreader which I shall keep up with :-).

Makes sense. :-) Well, if you want some different approaches to newsreaders,
I definitely think NN and Gnus are two that you need to try. ;-) If I
recall, SLRN seems to do things in the same way that Mutt does, at least,
to some degree. To make the comparison, I use mail(1) to read my mail.
