Hi Tom, good to see you here :-).

Ah look, it's slrn-howto-man! Howdy!

First of all the default behaviour of slrn is to *not* show already read
postings on entering a group. For now I'm using Esc-1 before hitting
the space bar, but I wonder if there's some configuration setting for
this.

Well the best advice is to simply get used to this behaviour and
believe it or not after a time it makes more sense than the old way.

You're absolutely right. It's starting to make more sense already. I
might be able to get used to this behaviour, in combination with the
reconstruct thread command you mention below.

But I note the FAQs have some advice on this:

http://pjr.lasnobberia.net/slrn-doc/slrn-FAQ-3.html#ss3.2

Of which I follow the final suggestion which is using Esc p to pick up
a parent article and ESC 1 ESC p to reconstruct a thread. Note the
address of the FAQs which are currently being rewritten.

Second, slrn always asks how many headers to download, with all
headers set as default. Is there a way to set this to a fixed value of
let's say 1500, and have slrn no longer ask how many headers to
download?

I see others have found the answer to this one, the reference is at:

http://pjr.lasnobberia.net/slrn-doc/slrn-manual-6.html#ss6.79

It looks like you are after the _negative_ number. I have not tried
this myself but I assume that -1500 will automatically download this
number even if more are present. A simple 0 appears to download _all_
articles without prompting. Interesting, I shall have to try this out.

Your assumtions are correct. I have set it's value to -750, and that's
the amount of headers slrn will fetch now by default.
