Hi folks!

What a coincidence; on 20/5 someone called Chunbala

At least not using Google to post, should get you a few more readers
:))

I have a problem here and no one seem to have an answer to me.
Neither Giganews, neither the router manufacturer, and I'm kinda
hoping that Luu Tran read this.

Not his problem; I don't think this has anything to do with Xnews
specifically.

Let me explain. I was accessing internet/newsgroups from my desktop
through my ADSL modem. My ISP works in PPPoE mode.

Yesterday I've added the D-Link DI-524 Wireless Router to my home
network.

The ADSL cable now goes in the router and the desktop is
hardwired to the router. If you're a guessing why, the wireless
feature of the router will be used with a notebook.

You can of course connect as many computers as you want to using the
wifi feature of any wireless router or access point ;))

So, everything was fine, until my first use of Xnews. I've queued a
serie of download, and after some time got several errors from
Giganews/Xnews. The error is "max number of simultaneous IP addresses
reached".

I suspect that comes from Giganews, not Xnews.

Giganews allows a max of 10 simultaneous connections. But I'm limited
to the 4 allowed by the Xnews.

That isn't what the error message is about; it mentions IP numbers,
not 'connections'.

I'm really a dummie in this network/wireless area, but I'm thinking
that somehow Xnews and the router are opening various instances/
connections with Giganews. As long it takes some time to the
connection to timeout, I'm getting diconnected/blocked. Is it
correct? Is it feasible?

Someone had the same/similar problem?

May someone please help me to fix this problem?

Thanks in Advance.

Yes someone has had a similar problem. Putting "max number of
simultaneous IP addresses reached" into the 'exact phrase' box at
<http://groups.google.com/advanced_search?q=&;> returns one other
article mentioning the same error message from Giganews:

From: "Clarky" <axc97c@xxxxxxxxx>
To: "nzbperl" <nzbperl@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
Subject: Re: 403(?) Authorization required

(That looks like a Google web forum not a usenet newsgroup).

The writer of that article decided that his internet connection was
dropping during a session and then re-connecting, but the ISP was
allocating a different IP number to the re-connected session and it
was this that Giganews was objecting to (quite properly, I think).
But his software (not Xnews in his case) was assuming (quite
reasonably, I think) that it was safe to resume the existing session
when the internet connection was restored.

It looks as though the problem is caused by your ISP giving you a new
IP number when your internet connection is dropped and re-started
almost immediately. Contact your ISP and ask if they could give you a
'static IP', or at least ensure that brief interruptions in service do
not result in you getting a different IP number (by increasing the
'lease time' on their DHCP server).

You should also investigate why your internet connection is dropping
when you don't want it to; that could be a fault with your equipment
or with the telephone line carrying the DSL service or with the ISP.

hI!

Thanks for the info.

It was me... I've posted twice with different headers.

I don't think the problem is specifically on the ISP, because when I go
back to my "old" configuration, with the desktop connected directly to
the ADSL cable, no error happens.

This error happens a little while (20 to 30 minutes) after I start all
the 4 simultaneos connections.

D-Link tech support told me to change the MTU parameter, from 1492 to
1400. But the problem persists.

I'll try another newsreader and see what happens.

Doing that, the problem will be the router for sure.
