But is there a newsreader which will also show a list of newsgroups
which have been _removed_ from the server?
Not that your question isn't interesting...but what practical value
would that have? If a group had been removed that you were
subscribing to, you'd know it. If a group had been removed that
you weren't subscribing to...so what? It would simply be the same
as one that had never been carried: unavailable.
Yes, I can see what you mean. My question stems from the recent
uproar when Easynews apparently removed all CP groups from their
servers (supposedly as advised by the "Internet Watch Foundation" -
some kind of British censorship group) despite still advertising
their newsgroup feed as full and uncensored.
Good for them.
Many people on Easynews have suggested that this is the first step on
a very slippery slope and that music, video and similar newsgroups
might be the next to be removed.
Easynews would lose all its business to its competitors if it did
that. I guess it's already lost its CP users, but I doubt that makes a
dent. And maybe LEA have a list of Easynews customers who for some
reason just recently decided to drop their subscriptions. ;)
Some people have forecast the death of Usenet altogether, although I
wouldn't go so far as to subscribe to this view - but who knows?
IMO, the binaries groups, along with the way ISPs have mishandled
dealing with them, have done more damage than could be done by removing
the entire hierarchy. If the alt.binaries.* were destroyed, the rest
of Usenet would survive on news.individual.net and those servers run in
people's basements.
Someone on one of the Easynews support groups gave a listing (by Thoth
for the Mac) of the newsgroups which had been removed and I just
thought it would be an interesting exercise to keep a watch on the
newsgroup list without having to subscribe to a particular group.
NNTP has a NEWGROUPS command that lets a client easily fetch a list of
groups added since a given time. I don't think there's anything like
that for getting a list of removed groups (but ICBW). To monitor
that, I'd occasionally use LIST ACTIVE and save the output, then diff
the output files. Probably more trouble than it's worth, if it's just
idle curiosity.
