You should really consider upgrading to a newer slrn.

The version you are using has this problem. It occurs if the Message ID
+ the "References: " string is longer than 78 chars, but the Message ID
is shorter than 78 chars, so it will fold the References: Header
directly after the keyword, which is not allowed and the newsserer will
throw away the "empty" references line.
