installed any special font, just whatever Slackware 12 installs by
default + Microsoft 'font-pack' + Open Office. But I did change

That's identical to what I have. What $TERM you using?

Only damage was to some man pages. But I suspect that Gutsy defaults
to UTF-8? I am of course no expert at such things and of course the
chinese text probably is a lurid invitation to a porn site anyway :-)

Yeah I know. And unless I can see the URL I can't find the porn
site :) Now you understand why I need it working.
