I would like to have Xnews save headers downloaded from a given
server so that this list only needs to be refreshed with the
latest new threads/posts next time I connect. Ideally I'd also
like it to save the articles I've read so that I can use the
Custom Filter function to search within the body of read posts.
Just keep in mind that the saved articles/headers will not be
saved after they expire on the server. If you want to keep them
more permanently, you will have to archive them to a folder.
I haven't yet figured out how to archive articles. Sites explaining how
to achieve this I've read thus far have not been expressly clear.
To this end I've tried using the 'Storage Option' for each
server; I've set it to 'Store Headers and Articles'. Problem is
that Xnews does what I expect it to for some servers but not
others.
Some examples...
news.mozilla.org -- When I subscribe to the
mozilla.support.thunderbird group on this server although a list
of threads and posts soon appears in the this group's window,
every time I fire up Xnews and open this group Xnews starts
downloading the entire list of threads/posts on the server for
this group. This takes a while to complete -- there's 40,000 of
'em. The same occurs with subcriptions to all groups on this
server.
Check your settings. This behavior is indicative of having the
"Load Read Articles" box checked on the Special->Setup Xnews->Misc
Tab. For the behavior you desire, make sure this box is
UNchecked. This setting also appears in the xnews.ini file in the
[Misc] section. If the behavior is different for different
servers, then you might also want to check the "servers.ini" file
for a line that reads:
LoadReadArticles=1
(Change the 1 to a 0 for your desired setting).
I want to have a complete list of articles on the server presented to
me each time I access a given group *including* those previously read
as well as having new messages added to the refreshed list. I thought
'Load Read Articles' needed to be checked to make this happen,
otherwise read messages disappear when the list of articles is
refreshed. Or am I mistaken?
[...]
Another strange behaviour that I cannot reverse has manifested
with the View | Show All Headers function. Initially Xnews was
not displaying full headers but I turned it on, I thought
temporarily, to view a couple of user agent strings. Despite
trying to turn this function off article views default to display
full headers.
It *is* temporary...but can be permanent.
I thought it was temporary, that's why I'm surprised to have every
article open to the 'Show All Headers'. To my knowledge I have not
altered a setting to make this action permenant. As it stands I have to
manually deactivate/uncheck this feature for every message viewed. This
unwanted behaviour is present universally across all NG subscriptions.
Initially the default was to universally display a standard abbreviated
header.
With Xnews not running open your "xnews.ini" file with a text
editor
Hmmm... This may have been where the problems began. I edited
'xnews.ini' and in all likelihood did so with Xnews running.
The change I made was as suggested here:
http://www.seegras.de/xnews/article.htm
under the heading 'Archive -> [Archive-Folder]'. Under [Misc] in
xnews.ini I added "Archive=*" which is supposed to "let Xnews create
and name a folder for each group." I thought this would be a simple way
to archive messages.
Could this have corrupted my Xnews 'profile' and caused sequellae like
the odd behaviours I've described? Would that mean it's time to start
over again and rebuild it and configure settings from scratch?
and look inThat's good to know how to tweak the headers display in the Xnews.ini
the [Display] section. There should be a line that looks like:
ShowAllHeaders=0
If it is set to "=0" then it is disabled. If set to "=1" then it
is always enabled. If it is set to "1", then change it to "0".
If the line is missing, then add it.
file -- without Xnews running.
Thanks for your help, John.
