There's a mechanism to impart info, certainly.

Yes, debconf allows warnings to be displayed, as notably happened
during the Xfree86-to-Xorg upgrade when a lot of stuff broke very
badly for some people. In fact, for all I know there may have been
warnings to people upgrading pan 0.xx to 0.xxx that some features
would be unavailable and user config files would no longer work, but I
don't think I had the Pan package installed at the time.

Although I've not seen any
flashing lights come up warning me I'm going to install "beta" software;
Just a line or two in the software description.

You may be missing some warnings if you're using the default debconf
settings.

# dpkg-reconfigure --priority=low debconf

It's not a bad idea to set "--priority=low" as default in the second
screen.

WRT to Pan, there's no
mention of the dev status of the 0.100 series. My point (poorly made,
obviously) was that the packager may not be aware of the WIP status of a
package. Particularly if they're relying on the input of third parties.
Of course, they /should/ be aware, but appear not to be.

I see this in the Debian changelog:

| pan (0.106-1) unstable; urgency=low
|
| * New upstream release
| * This is the 17th beta of a complete pan rewrite in C++.
| * Upstream will almost certainly release a final version of this code
| base before etch freezes, so I am including it in unstable now to
| have time to handle bug reports before etch.

<http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/p/pan/current/changelog>

The slow speed of Pan development evidently wasn't expected.

Anyway, you mention in another post that you're using Debian Testing,
and now that Etch has been released you should at least not be stuck
with version 0.119 for much longer. Later versions certainly seem
preferable for us scorefile-addicts.
