I guess I should say what I did to lose the files; this is pretty
embarrassing. In my defense, it was 4 am and I had no coffee. I
needed to unmount the drive, but it wouldn't for some reason. So then
I needed to remount it read-only. `umount -r` would do that, but with
the word "remount" in my head I typed the magic letters r and m. The
only part I got right was the -r switch, to guarantee maximum
destruction. An immediate ctrl+c saved some stuff, but not much.
alias rm="rm -i"
If you MUST use the -r switch and DO not want be prompted you will need
to specify the full path for rm "/bin/rm * -r". Above in bashrc would
have saved you. Yeah, yeah, hindsight....but now you've got foresight :)
