[using slrn and leafnode]

What I couldn't figure out was how to mark articles as 'protected' from
deletion (and flagged as such for easy identification).

You load up (interpret) the util.sl and nn.sl macros in the distribution
and then grab the stickytags macro (google) and you can search, mark and
protect

All Greek to me, but I'll take a look over the next couple of weeks.
Thanks.

that said, if you are using leafnode, or slrnpull it doesn't
really matter since the article text is local anyway, so an entry in the
score file should be enough.

As I understand it, leafnode is an NNTP server, so won't it have its own
purge settings? That being the case, how do the client score entries
affect the server purging settings? I'm not questioning what you said, I
simply don't understand the mechanism.

Also - another use case - I generally download headers, then mark
articles for download, then download. Last time I use leafnode and slrn,
I seem to remember that I couldn't work out how to do that; instead I
ended up downloading all articles. Is that possible? (I'm not after the
how, right now, just affirmation that it can be done.)

I use this
feature a lot to store selected articles. These articles are marked as
read, so don't display unless the appropriate filter is set. So, in
Gravity, I can select the "Show all Protected" filter within a ng to
display my "archive". All protect does is mark the article to be ignored
by the purge process.

In the above, it protects the article from a catchup and even if marked
read, it will be visible when you open the group, so it works a bot
differently. also slrn has no view filters to speak of but you can sort
and score to your hearts content which should keep articles of interest
in view.

Ah! You've answered my question above.

Filtering might be a problem - not that I do anything complex - but if a
behavioural change is needed, then I can probably cope :-| In Gravity, I
have the filter set to show unread - unsurprisingly. I don't want to see
read messages, since I like a visual cue of how much stuff I need to
scan/read; I can also scan the subjects for interesting stuff to read or
stuff to mark read without reading. Also, Gravity shows the counts of
unread articles, which gives an idea of the scale of scanning/reading.

In the background - kind of - the read + protected messages sit unseen
waiting for me to action them. Thus, from time to time, I'll switch to
the 'show protected' filter.

This works well, because I can identify the stuff I'm interested in
while I'm not in a situation to do anything about it - either because of
time or location.

None of this is rocket science; in effect I'm just scanning for useful
stuff, and marking such for later action, with the added protection that
the interesting stuff is never purged and it's always local. The filter
allows me to see the useful stuff exclusively.

The other issue with using a local server is having to replicate it.
Most days I work on a Windows desktop box (with a Debian server on the
network). (Thinking about it, with the usenet client issue sorted out,
I'd move the desktop box to Linux.) When I travel, I have a process to
move the appropriate stuff to the laptop - with the need to work off-
line. This is no problem, since it's easy to automate the replication.
The laptop is dual boot (XP and Ubuntu), but I prefer to use Linux,
hence Gravity in a Windows' VM.

Consider using a VM if the tasks in the other OS are not as demanding.

This might be the way to go: use an XP VM on a server, accessible with
whatever locally, and simply take it with me when required, and copy it
back when I return. I just seems wrong, somehow, to do this just for
usenet use.
