Reality folded in on itself, and somewhere the following words from
"DG1" appeared in history:
I'm a noob in unix, I'm using a Mac OSX 10.3! I [am trying] to
[install/use] leafnode [and] newscache but struggling.
Good on yah... I'm a novice in Linux too, but I am learing quickly
how to shpx things up /real good like/. I haven't tried NewsCache
(next on the list), but I do like leafnode.
Local internet is very cheap & unlimited. Our local isp news
server is "news.is.co.za". If alot of people are downloading
the same files, it gets cached on the local news server & we
can download it @ 400KB per sec & if its not cached we get
speeds of 20KB per sec.
Ouch... I can understand why your ISP is using a cache server script,
but in the long run they should just out-source it.
How do i find out whats cached on the local isp news server ?
Telenet? That was the best solution so far.
I doubt your ISP will tell you what the trigger is for thier server,
but there are things you can try/do on your end to *ensure* the
groups you read will be there....
"slrn-pull" for instance has a /Headers Only/ option, and can/could
be configured to regularly fetch the headers. Just leave it running
in the background and "note" when there are new headers. There is
probably even a ready made script that will check any avalable
headers and notify you when certain subjects are avalable.
Check the leafnode man files. I'm sure it could be configured in a
simlar way (or with a little effort, modified to do the same).
