Once you do get it working, you can then write the launch commands to
your prefered apps into X11's "Applications" menu, under the submenu
"Customize..." You'll bypass having to enter the commands into
Terminal then, launching them instead from the Applications menu.

Thanks for all that, Mike, I'm making progress; I'll have a closer look
for your script in a moment.

By setting xhosts at both ends and setting $DISPLAY I've actually
managed to make xeyes (demo prog.) work remotely, so I hope I'm on
the home stretch now. I'm certainly learning a lot with this, not
least how to enable the root user on this Mac; watch out for a
mushroom cloud over Winchester and a rain of tiny Mac OS X fragments...

Hey, that is good news. If you can run xeyes you should be able to run any
app that's available, you only need to know their common CL names to
launch.

You may also need to add an extra '-' before display in some cases, I've
found some but not all require an extra hyphen, as in:
'--display <your Mac>:0.0'

Here's some Commands to a few common apps I run:

'ooffice -calc -display <Mac>:0.0'
'ooffice -draw -display <Mac>:0.0'
'ooffice -impress -display <Mac>:0.0'
'ooffice -writer -display <Mac>:0.0'
'pan --display <Mac>:0.0'
'gimp --display <Mac>:0.0'
'nedit -display <Mac>:0.0'
'gedit --display <Mac>:0.0'
'sol --display <Mac>:0.0'
'gftp --display <Mac>:0.0'
'xterm -display <Mac>:0.0'
'wine <path to MS_app.exe> --display <Mac>:0.0'

You now should be able to run Pan from the Mac (see my UA headers this
post), there's bound to be an installed Pan on your Linux box if it's a
typical distro install.
