For that matter, how many newsreaders are still being developed at all?

You may have meant it as a rhetorical question, but in view of the
recent discussion about slrn, it might be intersting to have a little
poll.
'My' newsreader, tin, is being actively developed. Minor updates on
average every six months, major ones every few years. For details, see
<http://www.tin.org/history.html>.
How about others?
SLRN seems to be in development. Pan is still undergoing its complete
rewrite. Thunderbird still gets regular updates, ofcourse.
On the Windows-side, there's Mesnews and Agent. Dialog, Gravity and XNews
are doubtful. Xananews is going slowly but steadily.
Ofcourse, NNTP has been around for quite some time now, and the
protocol and its features haven't changed much, so when a program has
matured like SLRN, it doesn't need much updating anymore. And when there's
a good(-enough) _free_ client available, nobody has the urge to write new
ones. :-)
