Forget that last post. From random (bin) samples I get:
yEnc: 129.24 bytes/line
UUE: 62.34 bytes/line
but there'd be too much error multiplying those values by lines. I'm
better off doing what I was doing. Unless someone knows of a
newsreader that displays article size in bytes (not KB's), in a column
and can import nzb's?

I'd say most other newsreaders for binary content do.

From the RFC2980 spec.....

(This is the description of the datastream resulting from an XOVER
command.)

'Each line of output will be formatted with the article number,
followed by each of the headers in the overview database or the
article itself (when the data is not available in the overview
database) for that article separated by a tab character. The
sequence of fields must be in this order: subject, author, date,
message-id, references, byte count, and line count.'

So the byte count of the individual message is included in the XOVER
data. Why this is not incorporated into XNews, I don't know.

While it is available in the XOVER, it seems it is not typically stored
with the headers. It seems that Bytes is calculated on the fly by the
server as well.

Notice that bytes is listed as 2675, however when I grab the headers of
the article:
