If you start your "reply" by clicking on the 'Reply' link that appears
inside the coloured area at the top of the article you are reading
(click on 'show options' to see it if it isn't visible), Google will
put in an 'attribution line' to indicate whose article you are
replying to, and quote the whole of their article - which you can edit
to remove the parts you aren't replying to, to make your reply clearer
- or type your reply into new lines that you start in the middle of
the 'quoted text', if you want to reply to several points.
(That is an extract from a 'boilerplate' I keep handy for Googlers).
I'm going to steal that for a FAQ. That is if I can get the @#$%ing auto-
FAQ poster to accept updates.
Feel free :))
Google do change the details of G2 rather often and without making a big
noise about it, so those instructions may need to be changed or even
become irrelevant at any time.
You might find a use for this one too:
[mark@tavy cedit]$ cat webforum.clip
If you must use a web-forum-type interface to newsgroups, please, if you
can, 'reply' to the article your post is meant to refer to, and 'quote'
the relevent text that you are replying to, along with a sensible
'attribution line', so that the rest of the world out here in usenet have
some idea what you are replying to.
Newcomers to usenet newsgroups, start here: <http://nnqweb.tripod.com/>
"news.newusers.questions Official Home Page" or subscribe to the newsgroup
called news.newusers.questions.
The newsgroup you are posting in is called 24hoursupport.helpdesk and is
freely available on all good news-servers, and via 'Google Groups' if you
are restricted to using a web interface for some reason.
[posted and emailed]
[mark@tavy cedit]$
(Obviously, that one needs editing to make it of general use).
