Thanks, Rick! It's nice to know that there is someone here w/o all the sociopathy of the other alleged founts of info that have replied so far.
Sorry for Thunderbird, again, but i can't seem to get msgs more recent than 11 May. 06 out of Pan. The pop-up box for header/body downloads doesn't give functioning radio buttons or check boxes for specifying download parameters. In a Windblows system, where is the file i can edit to address this issue? Uninstall and reinstall did zip.
TIA

Open Pan ======> Shift + O ---- select dialog for download options.

Or ---> Menu bar / newsgroups / more download options / select dialog for
download options.

I have never used or installed Pan on Windows, but assume they should
use the same shortcuts. It's rare that I boot and choose Windows to boot
up any more. When I used Windows to access the internet, I used Xnews for
a reader. I have no problem with Thunderbird or any program someone else
chooses. At times I also use Knode, it has that much needed spell check I
mentioned earlier. (c;

You mention Mandriva 2006, are you considering installing Mandriva and
dual booting with Windows? Do you have the disc(s) to install a Linux
distro? Have you ever Installed a Linux distro before?

This can be none of my business and that's ok too.

Later,
Yes, thanks i had Mandrake 9.1, but killed it when i tried to compile a new kernel, 2.6.12 i think. The theory was that it should leave me both boot options, since i'm STILL trying to get all the libs ID'd and dependencies and so on. Short story- neither would boot! I definitely don't know enough yet, even with massive help from Aragorn and others on the compile. And i printed and had in front of me the directions from Aragorn, and i still hosed it. {8^) So, i ordered a DVD of Mandriva 2006 from LinCD and await its' arrival soon. Now i'll have the opportunity to look at packages, what they come with, what they need and urpmi my way to understanding both build processes and what lives where. I'm still trying to get a grasp on where things are, what they're called; no more ..exe, they are mostly in Bin. As to \var, \etc, still little grasp, but who's in a hurry? The challenge will be fun, and i have a.o.l.mandriva to start to participate in and get a better grip, yet.
I'll try a .9x Pan first; i chose 0.14.2 'cause it was stable. Thanks again.
