I have used slrn, nn, pine, tin and gnus. For someone new to text-based
programs I would recommend tin or slrn.

You should be able to configure all the above programs to share the same
newsrc file and this will allow you to switch between them and work out
which you like best.

I love trying out new newsreaders. Have fun!
