Post results of:
$ grep host /etc/leafnode/config

That shouldn't work; you need to be 'root' or 'news' to have
permission to read that file. (Have you made your user account a member
of the 'news' group?).

Nope. Ubuntu makes the first user created a member of admin. The system
is administered via the use of sudo. The root account is disabled by
default. Threw me for a loop on the switch from Mandrake, but I prefer
it now.

Curious. That would need to be known by whoever sets up a system for
multiple users, otherwise things might not work at all as expected. (I
can imagine someone creating users in alphabetical order at installation
time, thus inadvertently giving ten-year-old Anna admin powers ... Oops!).

[07:41 PM][J:0][sinner@~]$ ll /etc/leafnode/config
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9954 2006-03-12 18:04 /etc/leafnode/config

I think my Mandriva system is more conventional - and closer to the
specification in the Leafnode manual:

[mark@tavy ~]$ ll /etc/leafnode/config
-rw------- 1 news news 251 Feb 12 13:06 /etc/leafnode/config

so:

[mark@tavy ~]$ cat /etc/leafnode/config
cat: /etc/leafnode/config: Permission denied

but:

[mark@tavy ~]$ sudo cat /etc/leafnode/config
server = news.individual.net
username = ******
password = ******

server = news.clara.net
nodesc = 1

expire = 90

initialfetch = 200

timeout_long = 30

maxcrosspost = 3

filterfile = /etc/leafnode/filters

hostname = ID-107770.user.individual.net
