That shouldn't work; you need to be 'root' or 'news' to have
permission to read that file. (Have you made your user account a member
of the 'news' group?).

Nope. Ubuntu makes the first user created a member of admin. The system
is administered via the use of sudo. The root account is disabled by
default. Threw me for a loop on the switch from Mandrake, but I prefer
it now.

[07:41 PM][J:0][sinner@~]$ ll /etc/leafnode/config
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9954 2006-03-12 18:04 /etc/leafnode/config

If sudo is set up for the current user then

$ sudo grep host /etc/leafnode/config

does work; otherwise su to 'root' before issuing the command. (The user
'news' on my system is not su-able).

Not necessary with Ubuntu, as above.

I get

$ sudo grep host /etc/leafnode/config
hostname = ID-107770.user.individual.net

for example. That is what leafnode uses to create my Message-ID headers,
if my client doesn't create a valid-looking one. (That FQDN is granted to
me as part of the service I pay for from Individual.net; it is both
'valid' and unique to me, which is useful for scoring or filtering
putposes. I have no registered domain name of my own).

Also, the output from

$ cat /etc/hosts

[07:48 PM][J:0][sinner@~]$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 gates-of-hell.com localhost gates-of-hell
localhost.localdomain
127.0.0.2 news.gates-of-hell.invalid
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

would be useful. (Normal users can run that one). I get

$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 tavy.mobile.private tavy localhost

as this machine is currently 'stand alone', ie not networked, that seems
to satisfy the basic requirements of the system - but doesn't give usenet
(or email) programs anything to build a good public FQDN from; hence my use
of the optional hostname setting in leafnode.

I use it as well.

A: None. The darkness will cause the light bulb to change by itself.
