Anyway, you now have basic newbie problems, i.e. nothing to do with my
(tin) package or Cygwin or Windows, so I suggest you start RTFM! :-)

Now it runs, but the target was, to be pointed to new postings related to
important threads.
In the first hopeful posting promoting tin, the -Z option was referred.
If I started tin with -rZ no output was generated.

Sigh! :-(

In order to get notified of interesting threads, you of course *first*
have to *tell* what *is* "interesting" (to *you*). That is done by
marking threads/articles as "hot" ("auto-select"). That can be done
in tin, with Ctrl+A (^A in shorthand notation), or outside of tin, by
editing the .tin/filter file (when tin is *not* running).

For example I have marked this thread with:

group=news.software.readers
case=0
score=hot
subj=*notification if new posts in marked threads*
time=1148912972 (2006-05-29 14:29:32 UTC)

For details on scroring/filtering, see the comments at the beginning
of the .tin/filter file and the filter section of the tin(5) manual
page.

See also the '[', "quickly auto-select (hot) an article using
defaults", key. I.e. the above example was an example of 'quickly
auto-select'. I only had to press '[' while reading your original
article, and tin did the rest. You can configure what '[' does, i.e.
*you* can the defaults. Configuration can be done in tin with the 'M"
(menu) command, or outside tin by editing the .tin/tinrc file (when tin
is *not* running).

Bottom line: With RTFM, I obviously also meant RTFHelp, i.e. just
press 'h' (help) at any moment. I.e. use Help for an overview, the
tin(1) manual page for more detail and the tin(5) manual page for
details on configuration.
