The method I use is a 'box' like this

I got the idea from Knode, but I now have a crude macro in the editor I use
with slrn, to insert the | at the start of each line. I rarely see
anything marked with the 'cut here' lines produed by Gnus - but something
like that would be easier to insert with a simple editor macro. The
slrnish verbatim marks would probably just cause confusion in many (most?)
groups.

I'm also playing with the 'boxes' program from
<http://boxes.thomasjensen.com/>.

I decided to give boxes a go today and came up with a modification on
the 'peek' config, should be easy to adapt to your above design:

snip

Correct :)) There is a similar box among the examples on the boxes website
now, too.

The trick is to integrate 'boxes' into my editor. The best I've come up
with so far (for mcedit) is to highlight the text to be 'boxed' and save it
as a file (eg the default cooledit.clip, ie Ctrl-f Return) then from a
terminal prompt run 'boxes' on that file, and then back in mcedit insert
the new 'boxed' file (ie F15 and edit the filename then press return).
Aternatively, instead of pasting cited text into mcedit, save it to a file
which can be 'boxed' and then inserted. That actually works fairly well,
and is certainly better than inserting lots of | manually, but ultimately
being able to run a macro to do the whole thing automatically would be
nice. I'd like to work that out for myself ;)) As mc (of which mcedit
is a part) is an S-Lang program, this would also be useful for getting
more out of slrn.

I may also come up with a 'citation box' that I prefer to the one I use at
present; the | is too easily mistaken for a quoted text marker, but I do
like to have some sort of visual reminder on each line of what I'm
'citing' as well as having 'quote on' and 'quote off' lines at start and
end. Alternating pairs such as \ and / have the advantage that subsequent
'snipping' of the cited text is slightly easier to spot:-

/ Sony 'running jump' ad derailed
\
/ Objections from transport staff have prompted Sony into removing posters
\ advocating that consumers "take a running jump" from a number of tram and
/ tube stations across the UK.
\
/ The PSP promos were pulled from "inappropriate" sites after a worker on
\ Manchester's Metrolink light rail system raised concerns after spotting

\ Piccadilly station.
