That's what I did, but it only amounted to adding this to my
~/bashrc:

# news (for tin)
export VISUAL=/usr/bin/gvim
export NAME=eerok
export ORGANIZATION="Quitters Anonymous"

If your default editor is okay (mine is set to "vi" which is
not quite what I like) then you don't need to set VISUAL. If
you have an /etc/news/server properly set (which you probably
do), you don't need to set NNTPSERVER. I think my NAME
setting is redundant now, since I changed something in
~/tin/tinrc that covered that ... so it's not so onerous, just
a couple little things.

The size of the config file is less of an issue once you learn
how handy the "M" command is.
