Done with Dialog.

Well, this is a bit of a rant, I guess, but I do have a serious question
also. :)
I just noticed that Dialog corrupted my local archive of at least the
comp.lang.ruby group which I had stored since 2001 as a reference database.
Used to use Agent, then imported it when I started using Dialog a year or
so ago. Anyway, a large number of older messages are empty, so I guess the
database files got corrupted somehow. Doesn't make me happy, but c'est la
vie. What it does mean is that I'll stop using Dialog, because it doesn't
seem to be up for the task of storing groups with 150,000+ articles. I need
something more robust.
So, the question is where to switch to. Ideally, I'd like to store my
articles in a standard format (mbox for example) so that migrating to
another OS in the not-so-near future would be painless. Unfortunately that
doesn't seem to be possible with GUI newsreaders except the Mozilla
products (Thunderbird doesn't handle large groups well either). Hamster, I
believe, uses a special format also.
I might go with XanaNews, now that my old database is pretty much fried,
since I had an eye on Colin's software for a while... but the missing
import capabilities stopped me from switching. A local newsserver would be
better, just for the independence from a specific reader, but I'm not sure
if I want to deal with the additional hassle unless it uses a standard
format for storing the data. (Because I still pay for connections by the
minute, I need something with offline features.)
Any thoughts?
