About XNews/other readers, and downloading from Mac groups: HELP PLEASE?!?!

I've asked several people in different groups, emailed a person who runs
a website about Mac/PC compatibility, spent a long time looking at
countless web pages, and still haven't figured out a pleasant solution to
my dilemma. Is there one????
The dilemma is this: older Power Mac. No internet. Recent PC. Very
fast internet. Occasional browsing of certain Mac groups, especially
abm.applications.retro. Find something interesting. Xnews shows it's
downloading, but file doesn't appear in the folder. Ever.
It obviously has something to do with the encoding. I believe it's
binhex. Could be wrong. There's a few different ones.
Agent will download them, but leaves end of segment garbage at the end
of each part. Multi-part files (dozens of parts!) are a real pain. I
must go through every individual part, remove any unwanted headers and
"end of part 'x'" statements (not a header, what would you call it), and
then because no program on the PC seems to handle the format right, I
have to use a file concatenator to join them all. THEN, I transfer to
the Mac, and hopefully the BinHex decoder will convert it into a proper
..sit archive so it can finally be used. And I HAVE had a few programs
that couldn't be decoded (invalid or unrecognized) after ALL the tedious
work! Thankfully those particular ones didn't have many parts!
Everyone seems to be pretty clueless about this issue. I looked a
number of times on the net for any information about downloading/decoding
mac-specific usenet formats, but came up with very little. It was
frustrating.
I don't have a reason to download all that often (my mac is mainly
used for audio recording), but newsgroups are a great source of really
cool, discontinued and obsolete programs which are just PERFECT for a
mid-to-late nineties Macintosh.
ANYONE HAVE SUGGESTIONS/CLUES/SOLUTIONS???? I would appreciate them
greatly!
THANKS TO ANYONE WHO AT LEAST RESPONDS
