It is apparently possible to run OE and IE under 'wine' if you decide to
stick with them when you are doing everything else with Linux-native
software.
You don't seem to need any 'advanced news-reader' features, such as
score-files and filtering, just something that can accomodate the
arrangement of 'panes' that you like and has adaptable header threading.
Several Linux-native programs can manage that; some can also 'render' HTML
and even 'compose' it, if you really want to do that. Knode can do most of
that, I think, and integrates well with Kmail for e-mail - the two together
plus some other useful tools, make "Kontact" - KDE's answer to Outlook.
Pan is a very flexible and powerful graphical news-reader; but its
interface may not be as configurable as you seem to want, and its multitude
of advanced options may get in the way of your approach. Worth a look and
a fair trial, though :))
Thunderbird combines e-mail and newsgroups into one interface, as does OE,
and is said to be easy to get started with. I don't know if it can exactly
replicate what you are used to, and it is a rather large download.
The best advice is probably to try several, and give each one a fair try.
You may be surprised to discover that your present way of working is
dictated as much by OE's shortcomings as by your actual preferences, and
that something like Knode is already more 'your sort of thing' with minimal
adaptation. Be prepared for some eye-opening ;))
