Ahh, there's a couple of it's problems. It doesn't shut down completely
using the systray icon. It also /sometimes/ will not uninstall completely.
It's probably a part of your troubles (not to mention known conflicts with
NAV).
To manually uninstall ZoneAlarm, follow the instructions here:

After manually purging ZA from your system, try disabling the outgoing
email scans in NAV. Also, make sure you go online first (don't let the
email client make the connection).
In OE (not sure about TB), there's a checkbox in
Tools --> Options --> Connection
to "Hang up after sending and receiving". Make sure that box is unchecked.

If you do SP2 for XP, it will reenable the firewall by default.
