If we're talking about freeware options, I'd second that recommendation :)
We've been providing newsgroup services since 1992, and while we've seen a
number of newsreader applications come and go, Xnews seems to be the prevailing
choice among our members. On the paid or commercial side, Forte Agent would be
the reader of choice.
On a related note, we also developed a web-based reader that many of our NNTP
based members have gravitated towards over the years.
The HTTP/Web protocol typically carries less overhead than NNTP, and is often
better suited for handling binary content (decoding, downloading, etc.) so our
members have seen a performance benefit in most instances... and will use the
interface in conjunction with applications like LeechGuy, GetRight, GoZilla,
etc. to further automate their downloads.
