try (and my linux is a bit rusty, so it may format your harddrive or cause
your modem to dial your grandmother and try and sell a timeshare)
:w !ispell -b

which I believe will pass the file through to ispell. I'm not sure though.

vim has a built in spell checker in alpha atm. I suspect google might be your friend for vi.

that I don't know the answer to. I normally use the -C- switch, cause I prefer
a black and white look. It might be worth a punt to see if it gets you any closer to
the cause...
