Just in case it's overlooked in the 'multitude' of other responses:

See W. Citoan's response. If you score on the Message-ID (MID) of the
original posting ('base' posting, i.e. one which does not have a
References: header), then it should work (assuming all replying
newsreaders are RFC compliant in the sense that they always leave the
first MID in the References: header).

I don't use slrn, so I can not give specific instructions, but for
example 'my' newsreader, tin, has the following filter options:

# msgid=STRING Optional. Message-ID: line (e.g. <123@xxxxxxxxx>) with
# full references.
# msgid_last=STRING Optional. Like above, but with last reference only.
# msgid_only=STRING Optional. Like above, but without references.
# refs_only=STRING Optional. References: line (e.g. <123@xxxxxxxxx>) without
# Message-ID:

I mainly use "refs_only" [1], which will score any article whose
References: line contains STRING (which normally is a MID), i.e. it will
score any response, direct or indirect, to the original/base posting,
i.e. it will score an entire thread.

[1] "msgid" is similar to "refs_only" but also scores the original/base
posting itself, which is rather pointless IMO.
