Dinosaurs and plants didn't turn themselve into oil after all.

I always had my doubts on the theory of plants and animals becoming
oil. There was just too much of it in each discovery and it was always
geologically way too deep even for a 27 million year old event.

This guy will be the instant darling of Republicans.

It's been known for a long time that there was primordial methane
around when the earth was formed, and lots of it is trapped at depth
(but not too deep, where the mantle heat would decompose it) and in
methane hydrates. At the right temperature-pressure combination, some
methane will combine into random hydrocarbons, plus hydrogen. But the
vast majority of today's oil came from living creatures.

Off the top of my head:

1. The most plentiful straight-chain hydrocarbons in oil have odd
numbers of carbon atoms: 3, 5, 7, 9, etc. Fatty acids in creatures are
formed 2 carbons at a time, so they have 2, 4, 6, 8, etc carbons.
Losing the acid carbon at the end of each fatty acid under high temp/
pressure leaves pure oil hydrocarbons with an odd number of carbon
atoms. Methane would form hydrocarbons one atom at a time, 2, 3, 4, 5,
6, 7 etc.

2. There are other molecular structures in oil that are only
associated with life, such as the isoprene hydrocarbons. There are
other structural themes that are only associated with life.

3. Carbon isotope ratios are consistent with formation from plants,
not randomly from primordial carbon.

As for calcium carbonate, most comes from microscopic critters with
lime skeletons, but some comes from precipitation under natural
conditons of calcium with excess carbon dioxide in the water. You can
look at some limestones under the microscope and see the remains of
critter skeletons.
