I have a subscription TV service now. Comes with the phone and
broadband. Most of it's crap, but there are gems. Like the other night
I watched Coalminer's Daughter. It observes a good rule in drama: no
bad guys. As comedy has laughs, drama has pathos. Nothing gets the
pathos gland going like watching good people making hard choices, like
when Daddy takes a switch to Loretta for going out late with Dolittle
in his little red Jeep. He whups her, then snaps up the switch and
throws it into the fire. This is the guy who breaks his back and ruins
his lungs down the mine every day, trying to earn a living for his
family. He's going to be old by the time he's forty, and it breaks his
heart to see his little girl about to throw her youth away...

Great movie, if you've not seen it in a while. And not a bad guy in
sight.

Mr Peabody is off-camera? [Okay, smartassing admitted here.]

So where do bad guys belong? Not comedy, not drama. Where, then?

There are no *bad* guys, just guys who've been misunderstood.- Hide quoted

-I think Lee Marvin said something like, 'I don't play bad guys. I just
-play guys trying to get through the day.'

I was trying to remember the quote from the priest in the movie, 'Boys Town'
but I couldn't come up with it.
