Those of you who were educated in the 1950s (Sal? Others?), do you
know if there was a standard curriculum used for English? What was
taught at each grade level?

I'm especially interested in what was taught in grade-6. I realize
that my English sucks, and it came to me the other day that if I go
back and study the subjects taught in grade-6 (to which I was denied
entrance as part of an abominable experiment to determine what happens
when you lie to morons about their intelligence level) that might
clear up many difficulties.

I was pulled out of standard classes in grade 5 and put in classes for grades 5-8 with twenty other kids, taught by teachers who were supposed to polish our supposed brilliance until we sparkled. As a result, I can't really tell you what a standard curriculum for grade-6 was. We did a lot of report writing (I can tell you about Andorra and the okapi.) and oral presentations.

My grammar and punctuation was drummed into me by my freshman English teacher, who was a marvel.

Had lunch with old pals today (as we do every few months) and talk turned to Mr. Nalty, the freshman English teacher. He was that good, that memorable.

My grade-6, btw, was at age 10 so that would make it the 1962-63 school year, not the fifties.

Missing out on a piece of English is unfortunate, but you could've had worse lapses. I was popped from one class into a more-advanced class part way through fourth grade and missed all that pints and pounds stuff because the class I was in hadn't covered it yet and the class I entered was way beyond.

I still have to count on my toes to calculate how many ounces are in a quarter of a cup and how many ounces in a gallon.
