The link doesn't have to say a thing. The work is

Offering a printer-friendly version simply allows you
to print it out, not reprint it elsewhere.

I doubt very much if he is going to consider legal
action
So, as long as you're confident the owner wont take
action to protect his property, you feel it's ok to
violate his/her rights? If so, you're wrong.

Laws don't determine right or wrong. Laws were written
by men no better than you or me.

given that he was credited.
Crediting the author in no way absolves you of the
violation. You need permission.

Apparently he does not.

The owner of the work has
a right to determine where his/her work will appear.

If that were the case then every university student on
Earth is guilty of copyright infringement.

It is, in fact, the case. If they reprint someone else's
work without permission, yes, they're guilty of copyright
violation.

But they're not...because they credit the source.

No. Crediting the source does not make it not a copyright
violation. Not being charged does not make it not a
copyright violation. Getting away with it does not make
it not a copyright violation. If you steal from someone
and get away with it, you're still a thief.

And what does pasting an article in usenet steal from the author?

His property. You don't get to decide where it's ok to place someone else's
property. That's the owner's prerogative. Your agreement or disagreement with
that or the probability of being prosecuted for copyright violation has
absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the facts. You might get away with it,
but you'd still be a thief.

Several of the people who post in mw earn all or part of their living from
writing. Those people take copyright violation very seriously. That doesn't
necessarily mean they will attempt to prosecute every ignorant dickweed who
violates their copyright. It does mean, however, that they will occasionally
attempt to educate a violator, as has been attempted here. Some, most, will
accept that education graciously. A few will, in spite of being informed, go
on being fucktards. It's nothing new.
