"Socialism" is vaguely defined at best and is most useful as a word to
throw at people you're in a snit at.  Under some definitions of the
word the collective ownership of an army could qualify.

Frankly I think the only useful purpose a government serves is to
provide a vehicle through which individuals can band together and
accomplish things they could not do singly, things like creating and
maintaining an continent-spanning highway system for example.
Governments should not in my opinion be instruments of paternalism
that evolve into parasitism, but efficiently run profit-centers that
enable Man to do things that men cannot.

Unfortunately in many cases that includes the activity "think".

Excellent post, boots.

Except that he's wrong and by agreeing with him, you are too.

The state of Alaska does what the state of Alaska (read that to be the
electorate) wishes to do with its resources. Socialism has nothing to
do with that. The ownership of the land is still in the hands of the
owner.

Who is the owner?

The resources are still controlled by the capitalists who own
them.

Hmmm Don't they lease those rights? Lease is not ownership.

The practice of distributing those resources does not make the
state a socialist one.

What? Are they not " Spreading the wealth"? I'm sure Alaska's
dipstick used that phrase in her definition of Socialism.

Start thinking on your own again, PJ. I liked you better when you did
that. While Boots' diatribe is a good venting against the evils of
socialism, your man Obama will be practicing those principles when he
raises your taxes and redistributes that wealth to whoever he desires.

Wait! News Flash!

700 billion taxpayer dollars going to Wall street under Republican
socialism plan.
