Goodness, what a slap. There are some whiny ones here, that's for sure,
although that's true in most every crowd. Sure isn't limited to
misc.writing.
Lalalalalala just doesn't cut it.
Meaning ... ??
What's the intent? Why? Is it fun?
For some, yes. Everyone enjoys the froup for his or her own reasons.
Is it earnest?
Does that matter? Many peeps could care less about earnestness; they
look at the froup for entertainment and nothing more, and that's
certainly their right.
Do the principals really think they're brill or sharp or clever or authoritative or anything but onandonandonandonandon
ad nauseam and quid pro quo hoc ad hominem boring?
Who are these *principals*? When I examine the various threads where
there are particularly heated exchanges, I see no innocents. Yet when I
read *principals* in your words, I infer that you think some are
principal bullies, unfairly picking on innocent bystanders. If innocents
exist in this group, it's news to me. I've yet to see even one. Some
fake it fairly well, but that doesn't diminish the fact that they're fake.

I've never done anything to deserve the vitriol that's heaped upon me.
Even considering vitriol is a liquid, and doesn't heap all that well.
I think I was probably the innocent bystander in question. All I want
to do is discuss writing, really.
"vitriol is a liquid"
What's the freezing point of that?
There's no one answer. A vitriol is a sulphate. The metaphoric use
relates I think to oil of vitriol, or sulphuric acid. For the freezing
point of that I'll pass you over to my colleague Professor Ashby. With
a reminder to be very careful about which ice-cube tray you use,
because with H2SO4 in your martini, you'll be both shaken and stirred.
