That's why I think the man is doomed.

Either enough politicos will recognize him as someone they won't be
able to run like a puppet and he'll never make it onto the ballot, or
he'll get himself elected and end up buried alongside JFK.

Maybe he'll get onto the ballot then puke on some ambassador, that
might save him.
