Spam is an icon, associated with WWII shortages and Army meals. Even
if we like it, we make jokes about it. Think of fruitcake made with
meat.

Also, a slice of it, unadorned with anything else, is like eating a
big chunk of lard. It sticks in the throat and sits in your stomach
like a cannonball. Fried, it's not so bad since a lot of the grease is
left in the pan.
