You know, if you guys met in San Francisco, you could get married.

Not in San Francisco. The state halted the issuance of marriage licenses and voided the ~4000 marriage licenses taken out for same-sex marriages in San Francisco between 12Feb-11Mar 2004. Since then the issue of marriage equality has been slowly wending its way through the court structure.

In the freedom-loving, equality-loving, rights-loving USofA, marriage equality is only the law in Massachusetts, and soon Iowa. Schwarzenegger has vetoed marriage equality bills that passed the State Legislature two years running.
