hey Zero! Past is prologue, innit

Net Discrimination in Disguise

<http://www.savetheinternet.com/blog/2006/06/14/discrimination-in-disguise>

Does that ring any bells, Zero?

It seems likely that AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, and their ilk will get
the legislation that their lobbyists have bought from the U.S.
Congress with campaign contributions. It seems inevitable that The
Phone Company will shatter the internet (as we know it) into countless
broken little pieces.

These bloated corporations doubtless have crack legal departments.
They're gonna be busy, I suspect. Even though U.S. courts will
probably rule the legislation kosher, this plan is risky business.
Expect lawsuits from ruined small businesses, class action lawsuits,
lawsuits from angry individuals. Lawsuits all over the world in every
foreign juristiction imaginable. Maybe even the World Court.
Complaints of unfair competition. Accusations of liability. Take a
look at what Big Tobacco is going through. An unending nightmare of
litigation.

But enough venom from me. Enough negativity. I've been depressed
lately. Maybe my environment has got something to do with it.
Thinking about stuff like this internet hassle puts my mind in a toxic
wasteland. I bite my nails.

So I thought of something positive to contribute--with a little help
from my spies at The WELL. Several of them suggested that Net
Neutrality should be renamed Net Freedom. Because few people know or
understand what Net Neutrality means. My positive contribution is as
follows. Launch an advertising/PR/marketing campaign on the web and
in other media. Show people what will be lost if these bloated
corporations have their way.

There's so much cool stuff on the internet. Show some of it and
explain why it's at risk. Instead of negative attack TV commercials,
why not hire comedians to appear in the ads and gagwriters to write
the scripts? Think the Daily Show. Something like that.

Let high tech industrial artists design the creative package. What
the technology can do is awesome, don't hide it. Stimulate a mass
movement of coolness.
