Hats

I have a number of hats, none of which I wear. My hair's on fire a
lot, and I don't really want to snuff it that much.
The felt beret I made from the fleece of a Cotswald sheep. I keep
meaning to send it to Sal: it would look fine on her. As far as I know,
the sheep is still living her muttonly life in Goffstown, New
Hampshire.
I also have a beaver hat. That beaver died over 70 years ago, and not,
of course, from natural causes.
Beaver hats have been worn by saints and sinners of all nationalities
and races. This one was my dad's. He wasn't Danny Boone but he sure
could wear hats.
Beaver hats are pricier than coonskin caps on account of there being
more coons than beavers around. That, and beaver is thicker, softer,
and more durable.
I am talking about hats here.
I could clothe the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders in raccoon coats just
from the raccoons in my back .40 acre. But I'd have to poach beaver
from the swamp up behind the Chrysler dealership. That would be a
blessing: the beaver are felling the trees the blue heron nest in.
It's an eco soap opera out there at the rookery.
Still, there'd only be enough for g-strings.
My daughter now wears that hat. She looks like Julie Christie in Anna
Karenina in it.
Anyway, I just wanted to say sometimes, maybe most times, a hat is just
a hat.
You know?
Christine
