Once upon a time, social rules determined how long a grieving
person could be permitted to ignore societal conventions because
"he/she/it is in mourning."

We tossed most of those rules out as out-moded. So, how long
now can a bereaved parent use grief as an excuse for actions and
beliefs that were held before the grieving began?
